2 widows get new houses

The Muslim World League in partnership with First Lady Monica Chakwera’s Shaping Our Future Foundation has handed over two houses worth K46 million to two widows in Chawala Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe District.

The beneficiaries are Lusiya Abiyere and Vilentina Jemitala.

Speaking on Tuesday during the handover, Muslim World League Southern Africa orphan coordinator Twaibu Mustafa Chindungwa said the donation is part of the organisation’s ongoing support efforts in Malawi.

“We built the houses to improve the living conditions of the two women who had been living in dilapidated shelters. We are excited to finally hand the houses over to them,” he said.

Chindungwa commended the First Lady’s office for identifying the beneficiaries who were in dire need of support.

He said: “We were honoured to respond to Madam Chakwera’s request. It shows that with collaboration, we can bring lasting change to people’s lives and we will continue to work together in different areas”

Shaping Our Future Foundation executive director Michael Mkandawire also commended the Muslim World League for the project.

He said: “In the process, we identified the two women who were in need of proper shelter. It is the First Lady’s wish to see more women empowered economically in this community.

“As a foundation, we cannot build a house for every widow, but we can try to give them capacity to do so and that is what we are doing here.”

Lilongwe District Council monitoring and evaluation officer Blessings Makhiringa said the support came at a time the women needed it.

One of the beneficiaries, Abiyere thanked the organisations for the house, saying she will now sleep peacefully with her two grandchildren.
